Our Story
A passion for preservation, born in the heart of the Cotswolds
Where It All Began
Merry Hollow was born in 2012, when founder Eleanor Hadley discovered a box of her grandmother's photographs in the attic of her family home. Faded, scattered, and slowly deteriorating, these images represented three generations of family history—weddings, christenings, holidays by the sea, ordinary Sundays that had become extraordinary with the passage of time.
Eleanor spent months carefully restoring and arranging those photographs into a leather-bound album. When she presented it to her grandmother on her 90th birthday, the reaction was profound. That single album became the most treasured possession in the family.
This experience sparked a realisation: countless families had similar photographs languishing in drawers, boxes, and forgotten hard drives. These memories deserved more than digital storage—they deserved to become heirlooms.
Our Philosophy
Craftsmanship Over Speed
Every album passes through the hands of our artisans multiple times. We refuse to automate the finishing touches that make each piece unique. This commitment means longer production times, but the result is something that feels handmade because it genuinely is.
Materials That Endure
We source archival-grade papers, genuine leathers, and conservation-quality adhesives. Our albums are built to survive generations, not just years. The materials we use today will still protect your photographs a century from now.
Stories, Not Products
We see ourselves as storytellers who happen to work with photographs. Every layout decision, every page turn, every caption is designed to honour the narrative within your images. The album should feel like opening a chapter of your life.
The People Behind Your Albums
Our team of twelve includes trained bookbinders, graphic designers, and print specialists. Several of our artisans completed apprenticeships in traditional bookbinding before joining us, bringing centuries-old techniques into the modern era.
What unites us is a shared belief that physical objects carry meaning in ways digital files cannot replicate. We treat every project as if it were our own family's memories—because we understand that, to you, they are irreplaceable.
Our Cotswolds Workshop
Nestled in the rolling hills of Gloucestershire, our workshop occupies a converted Victorian mill. The building itself tells a story—stone walls that have witnessed two centuries of craft, now home to a new generation of makers.
We chose this location deliberately. Away from the rush of cities, surrounded by the quiet beauty of the English countryside, our team can focus entirely on the work at hand. There is something about this environment that encourages patience and precision.
